Introduction to OEE
In the manufacturing world, efficiency is everything. However, you cannot improve what you do not measure. This is where Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) comes in. OEE is the gold standard metric for measuring manufacturing productivity.
Simply put, OEE measures the percentage of planned production time that is truly productive. An OEE score of 100% represents perfect production: manufacturing only good parts, as fast as possible, with zero downtime.

OEE is calculated by multiplying three independent components: Availability, Performance, and Quality.
1. Availability
Availability accounts for all events that stop planned production long enough to log as downtime. It is calculated as the ratio of Run Time to Planned Production Time:
- Planned Production Time: Total shift time minus planned stops (like breaks, lunches, or scheduled maintenance).
- Run Time: Planned Production Time minus unplanned stops (like equipment breakdowns, material delays, or setup times).
2. Performance
Performance accounts for anything that causes the manufacturing process to run at less than the maximum possible speed while operating. It is the ratio of Net Run Time to Run Time:
- Ideal Cycle Time: The minimum time theoretically required to produce a single part.
- Total Parts: The total count of all parts produced (including both good parts and defects).
3. Quality
Quality accounts for manufactured parts that do not meet quality standards, including parts that require rework. It is the ratio of Fully Productive Time to Net Run Time:
- Good Parts: Parts that meet quality specifications on the first pass.
- Total Parts: Total parts produced.
Step-by-Step OEE Calculation Example
Let's walk through a concrete calculation for an 8-hour shift:
- Shift Length: 8 hours (480 minutes)
- Planned Breaks: Two 15-minute breaks (30 minutes total)
- Unplanned Downtime: 45 minutes of mechanical troubleshooting
- Ideal Cycle Time: 1.0 seconds per part
- Total Parts Produced: 24,000 parts
- Rejected Parts: 600 parts
Calculation Steps:
- Planned Production Time: 480 min (Shift) - 30 min (Breaks) = 450 minutes (27,000 seconds).
- Run Time: 450 min (Planned) - 45 min (Downtime) = 405 minutes (24,300 seconds).
- Availability Score: 405 min / 450 min = 90.0%
- Performance Score: (1.0 sec/part × 24,000 parts) / 24,300 sec = 98.7%
- Quality Score: (24,000 total - 600 rejects) / 24,000 total = 23,400 good / 24,000 total = 97.5%
- Overall OEE Score: 90.0% × 98.7% × 97.5% = 86.6%
In this example, the OEE is 86.6%, which exceeds the world-class standard of 85%.
Conclusion
OEE provides a single, simple number that accurately represents the productivity of your equipment. By breaking OEE down into Availability, Performance, and Quality, you can easily identify where your production is losing capacity and focus your continuous improvement resources on the areas that yield the biggest returns.
